Thespis is said to have introduced the first featured actor into dramatic performances which previously were presented exclusively by the chorus. His contemporary Solon resented him, with the explanation that what he showed on stage soon would be acted out in reality as well.

I heard the Bells on Christmas Day, their Old Familiar Carols play. And wild and sweet the words repeat, of Peace on Earth Good Will to Men.
